Ariel Princess Dress in Sea Green and Silver

This week I had quite a fun custom order for a Princess Ariel ball gown in sea green and silver.
Material is shantung faille and slipper satin.

The most challenging part was adjusting the ballgown bodice pattern to accomodate the scallop/fin shapes below the waist.

Full pleated skirt is separate and features a front panel of contrasting satin.

Mother of pearl buttons to compliment the 'sea' theme!

Matching starfish/flower hair comb.

Puffed sleeves, with insets of teal floral satin.
Trimmed with silver.

These were some of the inspiration pictures:
Ariel's dress as worn at the Disney parks.

  1. Oh, that is stunning! I love, love, love the color and the shine of the fabric.

    Lovely work, as always.

  3. So beautiful! I think your skirt with pleats/gathers and your neckline look so much better than the crinolined skirt and off-shoulder neckline of the official Disney parks gown! The off-shoulder neckline just doesn't look right... And those mother of pearl buttons are a sweet finishing touch!

  5. You did a fabulous job on this gown. I have to make this for my 16-year old daughter. I'm a quilter not really a clothes sewer so I have trouble with these elaborate costumes. Any tips on where to get the fabrics (we live in CT) or if there are patterns that would help get me started. Thank you.

  6. Hi Shelley,

I usually get my fabric from Fabric.com, because I live so far from fabric stores. I would check your local area to see if there were any unique fabric shops or warehouses, but if all else fails, there is always a Joann, Hancocks, or Hobby Lobby.

For pattern, I started with the Past Patterns victorian ball gown bodice pattern. But there might be something alot closer if you searched for 'Ariel' or 'Princess' in the Simplicity or one of the main pattern makers.

hope this helps! Good luck on your project!
